GHK-Cu (CAS 89030-95-5; molecular formula C14H23CuN6O4, average molecular weight ≈ 403 g/mol; composition Gly-His-Lys · Cu(II)) is the copper(II) complex of the tripeptide glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine. The free GHK tripeptide was first identified in human plasma by Pickart and Thaler (Nature: New Biology, 1973) — the foundational characterisation of the molecule.

Its copper-coordination chemistry and role in matrix-remodelling research were characterised by Pickart (Journal of Biomaterials Science, Polymer Edition, 2008), which describes the peptide’s high copper(II) affinity — comparable to the albumin copper-transport site — as the basis for its copper-binding and tissue-remodelling research activity.

A modern review by Pickart and Margolina (International Journal of Molecular Sciences, 2018) synthesises transcriptomic data showing GHK modulates the expression of a large number of human genes across repair and protective pathways — the gene-regulation strand of GHK-Cu research.
