Epithalon Australia. Epithalon is the telomere peptide. In cultured human cells the research reports telomerase switched on and telomeres lengthened, telomeres being the protective caps on the ends of chromosomes that shorten each time a cell divides until the cell stops dividing altogether. Long rodent studies from the same programme report changes in lifespan, tumour incidence and standard ageing biomarkers, and a separate strand covers melatonin rhythm and sleep. Worth being straight about the evidence: much of it is decades old, comes from a single research group, and the mechanism is still open.

How it does it. Epithalon, also spelled Epitalon, is a peptide of four amino acids, Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly, modelled on an extract of the pineal gland and one of the best known Russian peptide bioregulators. Epithalon (CAS 307297-39-8; molecular formula C14H22N4O9, average molecular weight ≈ 390 g/mol) is the tetrapeptide Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly (AEDG). It is a short synthetic “peptide bioregulator” modelled on the pineal polypeptide preparation epithalamin, developed within the peptide-bioregulator research programme associated with Khavinson and colleagues.

In cellular-ageing research, epithalon is studied primarily for reported effects on telomerase (hTERT) expression and telomere length in cultured human somatic cells — the finding first reported by Khavinson and colleagues (Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine, 2003), who described induction of telomerase activity and telomere elongation in human fibroblasts.
