SS-31 Australia. SS-31, also known as elamipretide, is the mitochondrial repair peptide. The research reports more ATP produced and less oxidative damage leaked while producing it. Because the tissues with the highest energy demand suffer first when that breaks down, the work concentrates on heart, kidney and skeletal muscle, reporting better muscle strength and fatigue resistance in ageing models and better tissue recovery after injury. It has been through human trials in genetic mitochondrial disease, which is unusual for a compound in this catalogue.
How it does it. SS-31 is a peptide of four amino acids designed to end up in one specific place, the inner membrane of the mitochondria. Its alternating pattern of positive charges and ring structures is what carries it there and keeps it concentrated. Once there it locks onto cardiolipin, a fat found nowhere else in the cell, which holds the membrane's tightly folded shape in place. That folding is what makes energy production efficient, and it degrades under stress.

SS-31 (CAS 736992-21-5; molecular formula C32H49N9O5, average molecular weight ≈ 640 g/mol; sequence D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2) is the Szeto-Schiller peptide 31, also referenced as elamipretide or Bendavia — a small synthetic tetrapeptide whose alternating aromatic-cationic motif concentrates it in the inner mitochondrial membrane in research models.
The Szeto-Schiller cell-permeable tetrapeptides — the class that includes SS-31 — were defined by Zhao and colleagues (Journal of Biological Chemistry, 2004), who showed they target the inner mitochondrial membrane and reduce reactive-oxygen-species-driven injury in research models.
The molecular mechanism was established by Birk and colleagues (Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, 2013): SS-31 binds cardiolipin — the phospholipid specific to the inner mitochondrial membrane — protecting cristae architecture and electron-transport efficiency.
