Its neurotrophic activity was reported by Inozemtseva and colleagues (Doklady Biological Sciences, 2008), who found intranasal Selank raises hippocampal BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) mRNA and protein in research models — indicating local neurotrophin induction.

Its GABAergic mechanism was characterised by Volkova and colleagues (Frontiers in Pharmacology, 2016), who reported that Selank alters the expression of genes involved in GABAergic neurotransmission — a molecular basis for the anxiolytic-pathway research the compound is referenced in.
