Mitochondrial-derived peptides (MDPs) are short peptides encoded within the mitochondrial genome rather than the nuclear genome. The class includes humanin, the SHLPs, and MOTS-c — the member most-studied in metabolic and AMPK-pathway research.

Their genome-encoded origin is what distinguishes them from synthetic mitochondrial-targeting peptides such as SS-31, which is designed to localise to the inner mitochondrial membrane.
