[ Methodology & handling ]

Aliquot

A measured portion of a working stock, often frozen separately to avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles.

To aliquot is to divide a reconstituted working stock into smaller measured portions. Researchers commonly aliquot and freeze a stock so that each portion is thawed once, rather than repeatedly freezing and thawing a single vial.

Repeated freeze-thaw cycles can degrade a peptide, so aliquoting is a handling step that protects sample integrity across a longer research programme.
